God in a Box
I remember campus fair where suddenly food stalls will be popping up and occupying the covered walk in our campus. I remember me and my classmates going there (sometimes when there are still classes, hehe) or right after duty to eat. Not that the food are special, but because the experience of eating something besides the canteen food. One of our favorites (and also one of the most popular) is the rice in a box meals (or the shawarma rice in a styro box, yum!). In this small box they try to put in everything needed for a meal, carbs, proteins, fats, sugar, fruits, veggies. You can also choose the flavor of your meal.
It just got me thinking, it would be nice to have God in a box. You know, you get all the qualities that you want your god to be. A god that is generous, tolerating, provider, etc. We also tend to give our God a time limit when we want something ( i want it now, I need it tomorrow, etc.) and even I am guilty of this. Then we get comfortable with our custom made god in a box, but the problem with this one is that our god in a box won’t get us through problems. Most people who put God in a box are left lost, purposeless, depressed, at the pits or at an extent, even angry with God.
Making our ideal god means we forget God’s nature. We sometimes make God our genie, only a giver; or an avenger or a janitor who cleans things that we messed up. We focus on God the provider, forgiver (don;t get me wrong, these are also qualities of God) but we tend to forget that he is holy, just and loving.
This is one of the problems of Job and his three friends. They thought they already know God and valiantly gave reasons why God does things, but when God spoke, INFO OVERLOAD!!!
Eating rice in a box does not leave my stomach full. It makes me want more, in the same way, our god in a box leaves us empty. Until we realize that God is way greater than our mind made box, we won’t get secured.
When I had a relationship with God, it was such an exciting experience. You get to know him more, love him more and be surprised. Almost everyday is a new adventure! Reading his Word is like a daily revelation.
“What is man that you make so much of him,
that you give him so much attention,” (Job 7:17)
I am guilty of putting God in a box. Even when I became a Christian, I still sometimes put him in a box. But until we realize that we are just a speck (or even tinier) and until we embrace the wholeness of God, his wisdom, love, understanding, mystery and all, we won’t be able to enjoy his presence and his love.
Jesus was God’s answer to man’s misconception that God is unreachable.
“No eye has seen,
no ear has heard,
no mind has conceived
what God has prepared for those who love him” (1corinthians 2:9)
As the song ‘Amazed’ says “how wide, how deep, how great is your love for me?” (ephesians3:18)
I don’t know! But for starters, he gave his only son to die for me, now that is something. Join me as we unravel more of God’s splendor and awesomeness. Being in this journey (which I pray you’ll also experience) gets me all pumped up.
You think you know, but you have no idea. Our God is a God of unending surprises.
Preach it!
