Cute angels, Weak Jesus?

One of our connotations or the first thing that pops in our head when we say the word angel are the cute cuddly, toddlers in the heavens playing their harps, or a kid (or worse a grown up)wearing diapers with a bow and arrow and appears on the 14th of Febuary.  Some views them as a gentle, meek, submissive person in white, however; our pictures of them are very far from how they were described in the bible.

We have it in our culture that whatever is good is weak.  When we say Jesus, we see a man who is gentle, meek, humble and submissive that’s why he died on the cross.  Today we even call him “bro”, which is just right because bible says that we are “received the spirit of sonship” (romans 8:15,NIV) and we are also a “co-heir of Christ” (galatians 4:7).

However, the problem starts if we look at CHrist as only our “bro”.

If there was anyone who can boast about a blood connection with Christ, it would have been James, the biological brother of Jesus.  Yet in his letter he never grasped and boasted the idea, instead he called him Lord and considered himself  a servant of  Christ.

Another example is John who we often tag as the “beloved” the one who reclined at Jesus at the last supper, one of the three pillars of the early church, one of his disciples which he called brothers yet in his book in Revelations, when he saw Jesus he fell in his knees and trembled and said “When I saw him, I fell at his feet as if I were dead…” (revelation 1:17)

At the end of our life,  we won’t be greeting Jesus our “bro” instead we will fall down in our knees and tremble with godly fear. Christian or not every one of us shall bow on our knees.

“…so that all created beings in heaven and on earth—even those long ago dead and buried—will bow in worship before this Jesus Christ, and call out in praise that he is the Master of all, to the glorious honor of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:9-11 Msg).

Biblically angels are not cute.  They are feared, they have swords, can cause calamities, mighty, powerful  and totally far from our concepts. (Joshua 5:13)

At the end of time, Jesus won’t be beaten, submissive and weak (in the first place he never was) instead we will fall in our knees in trembling and godly fear because of his awesome glory.

“Then I saw Heaven open wide—and oh! a white horse and its Rider. The Rider, named Faithful and True, judges and makes war in pure righteousness. His eyes are a blaze of fire, on his head many crowns. He has a Name inscribed that’s known only to himself. He is dressed in a robe soaked with blood, and he is addressed as “Word of God.” The armies of Heaven, mounted on white horses and dressed in dazzling white linen, follow him. A sharp sword comes out of his mouth so he can subdue the nations, then rule them with a rod of iron. He treads the winepress of the raging wrath of God, the Sovereign-Strong. On his robe and thigh is written, King of kings, Lord of lords.(revelation 19:11-16, Msg).

In our time, we make goodness, angels, even Jesus weak and boring, while the evil stuffs are cool, astig and strong.  Temptations grow stronger while our fear in God shrinks down. We easily fear other things but we fail  to fear God. If we are to fear something/someone, that should be God.

Fear of God brings us closer to him, gives us wisdom and helps us to live a righteous life and say no to sin.

“Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning.” (exodus 20:20, NIV)

“so that they will fear you and walk in your ways all the time they live in the land you gave our fathers.” (2chronicles 6:31, NIV)

” “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom,
and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” (proverbs 9:10,NIV).
