The question that shaped my life.

Since I was in college I have heard of a particular question that changed the very Operating System of my life. The person who discipled me always pound this question, and I thank him for this. This has changed the way I see things, process decisions and act upon those decisions. But before I share that question, here is some context to guide us. This question would only work assuming we believe that there is a higher standard that oversees all of us. I personally believe that this ‘higher standard’ is a relational God that wants His best for my life. I believe that Jesus is God’s Son that came to this world. He gave his all to bring glory to God and save me from my sins. Jesus wants what is best for me. Jesus bought me. Jesus owns me.

With these thoughts in mind, here is the question that shaped my life and I encourage everyone to think about it and try applying it in your life as well:

Will this Honor God?

A variation of this question is Would this glorify God?

Granted that there are many more things to consider in making a decision, but for me, the starting point is a surrender of will and the acknowledgment of the God who loved me and gave himself for me. Would this bring honor and glory to the One who deserves it all? Beyond my actions and straight to my heart motivation, do I want the honor and glory of God or the honor and glory of me?

This is beyond the  ‘is it right or wrong’ question, it goes straight to the heart. If we live to glorify God, then naturally we shun evil and wrong.

It deals straight to our deepest desires…who gets the glory and honor? Will this honor God? Would this (whatever ‘this’ is) glorify him?
